The National Fossil Park, situated in the village of Ghughwa in the Dindori District of Madhya Pradesh, is a unique and extraordinary tourist destination. This park houses plant and animal fossils that existed in India anywhere between 40 million and 150 million years ago.

Nestled across an area of 75 acres, this prehistoric treasure trove offers a rare glimpse into the past, where attractive and ancient fossils of leaves, trees, seeds, and even dinosaur eggs are waiting to be explored.

🦴 जीवाश्म (Fossils) क्या होते हैं?

Usually, when an animal or plant dies, it is quickly consumed by scavengers or decays and becomes part of the soil. However, in rare cases, when death occurs in an environment that prevents decomposition (like being buried under volcanic ash or deep mud), the physical remains of the animal or plant get gradually permeated by mineral particles. What is left over millions of years is a stone-like structure—a fossil of that organism.

Normally, fossils consist of hard parts of animals (like bones or teeth) or petrified wood of plants. But they can also be preserved marks left by organisms when they were alive, such as footprints, leaf impressions, nests, or even feces.
